SUMMARY:Foundations of AI: Introduction to Deep Learning
DESCRIPTION:Foundations of AI will fulfill the NCDS mission to connect communities of data science experts to support a 21st century data-driven economy by creating a data-literate workforce and bridging the gap between data scientists in the public and private sectors through educational and upskilling opportunities. \nIn this course\, attendees will learn about Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, starting with foundational concepts in machine learning and deep learning\, then moving to the basics of Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision that got us to our current boom in Generative AI as demonstrated by GPT-3\, DALL-E and other well-known tools. They will how to train their own AI models\, and how to make the most of open-source and pre-trained models on the market. \n\nHow machine learning works\nBasics of deep learning\nBasics of Natural Language Processing \nHow to do deep learning with language data\n\nPrereqs: Familiarity with Python is strongly encouraged. Some knowledge of data science and machine learning is useful but not required.  \nWe are pleased to offer a limited number of full scholarships for faculty\, staff and students at two-year and four-year academic institutions to attend. Please complete this form to be considered for a scholarship. \n\nPriority will be given to faculty\, staff\, and students from non-R1 and non-R2 academic institutions.\nThe scholarship form serves as the registration link for the event\, do not register via additional links.\n\nAmy Hemmeter has over five years of experience in industry in NLP as a Data Scientist\, Machine Learning Engineer\, Manager and Lecturer. She has worked on projects ranging from Conversational Al to Information Retrieval to Generative Al. She received her MSA from the Institute for Advanced Analytics at NC State University in 2018\, where she has also taught an annual workshop on NLP since 2020. As someone who transitioned into data science and NLP from a linguistics background (an MA she also earned at NCSU in 2016)\, she cares deeply about translating complex topics in data science into information that students from all backgrounds can understand\, as well as making that information relevant and practical to students who wish to make a career in industry.
